Product Description

TROPICA® – Venus’ fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) – 10 SeedsWorth knowing: The Venus’ fly trap is probably the best-known carnivorous plant. The bi-lobed leaves snap together quickly once an insect has landed on them. Insects of soft body tissue are sometimes even crushed by the powerful trap. The prey is broken down by digestive enzymes. The trap opens again a few days after.Origin: The moors of the American Atlantic coast of North Carolina are home to the Venus Flytrap.Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. Sow the seeds onto a well-moistened cultivation medium. The best germinating temperature is 25° to 28°C and takes place after 4 to 6 weeks.Place / Light: The Venus’ fly trap loves bright to full sunny places.Care: Grow the plant in unfertilized peat only and never water directly onto the soil. The pot should be placed in a saucer filled 1 to 3 cm deep with chalk-poor water. Do not fertilize! Fertilization is performed by the plant itself, that is by digesting trapped insects. Such won nutrients can be stored over a period of one year. After a single plant has carried out 4 to 5 digestions, the trap turns black in colour and can be cut off. New traps will grow again. Caution: It is very harmful to the plant to let the traps snap shut on purpose, that is by touching it etc..Winter period: Water somewhat less during winter bit do not allow the soil to dry out. Best is to place the pot bright and cool (4°to 12°C). It may happen that the traps turn brown and die. The plant, however, does not die but takes a kind of winter break. It sprouts anew in April. Continue watering, even if there are no traps left.Bonsai Suitability: No
